Students are naturally born thinkers. They think about everything. The challenge that most teachers experience is getting students to actively think about the text. Explicitly teaching reading strategies provides students with the tools needed to become aware of their thinking, provide confidence in their ability to think and analyze text, and, most importantly, make thinking visible and audible.
Here are 7 reading strategies that you can infuse on students.
1- Educate students with the concept of phonics
2- Summarize & Synthesize- focuses students on combining their thinking and the details found in the text.
3- The use of the 3-2-1 method. Ask students to Jott three things they learned from the book, two things they found fascinating, and one question that came into their mind after reading the content.
4- Engage them with fun learning games that involve reading.
5- Ask them to read aloud during reading sessions.
6-Ask Questions- help readers to use questions to clarify ideas or learn new information.
7- Make students sort words from a story into parts of speech.
Through the explicit teaching of reading strategies, students are provided with the tools needed to strategically think and problem solve as they explore the text.
